US military updates findings on Syria attack
The U.S. military initially said that the attack on Green Village in Syria earlier this month was from indirect fire, but officials said they now believe it was explosive charges.
Officials concluded last week that the April 7 attack was carried out by one or more people who used the “deliberate placement of explosive charges,” according to a statement from the command that oversees military operations against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
“Upon further investigation, OIR officials assess the explosions in Green Village were not the result of indirect fire but rather the deliberate placement of explosive charges by an unidentified individual(s) at an ammunition holding area and shower facility,” they said in a statement.
“The incident remains under investigation,” the statement added, though it did not explain what led to the new conclusion.
On the day of the attack, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve said it received two rounds of “indirect fire that struck two support buildings,” while four U.S. service members were evaluated for possible head injuries.
The United States has several hundred troops in Syria as a part of its efforts to ensure ISIS does not reconstitute in the area after losing its territory in the region years ago.
